Death is a phase in the life of a being, a door to another existence. It is a pause in the long journey of the soul upon earth. In death is hidden the process of renewal, a new becoming, a new opportunity for the soul to begin anew, atone for the past, and make peace with it.

There are two basic approaches to life. Both are well known and historically important. Since the earliest times, people have tested both and left behind a great repository of knowledge about their value and importance in securing our lives and minimizing our suffering. Both approaches are meant to shield us from the worries and anxieties of life created by the impermanence and uncertainty, and ensure our happiness, peace and Wellbeing. However, they adapt different methods and techniques to achieve this supreme goal.

Most of the time in your life, you have the choice either to let negativity rule your life or you take control of it and allow positive thinking to prevail. You always have this choice in performing actions, making decision, choosing relationships, selecting attitudes, adapting to the environment, assessing or evaluating situations, weighing problems and anticipating outcomes.

When you make the right choice using your discretion, you will have an opportunity to trust your instincts, take responsibility and feel good about yourself. In any given situation there are always some positive and negatives, opportunities and threats, where you can use your knowledge, skills, abilities and judgment to bring out the best in you and manifest the best you can.

Where the outcomes are not predictable or disappointing, you may use them as learning opportunities. If you cultivate a growth oriented mindset, that see possibilities and opportunities for self-growth, you have greater chances of feeling positive about your actions and their outcomes.

Simple experiences can change your life and give you a new direction which you never thought before. People are motivated by many things in their lives. Some people are inspired by a scripture, a particular teaching, a guru, a book, a movie, a conversation they had with their friend, a relation or even a stranger, an incident they witnessed, a dream they had, a memory that surfaced in their consciousness or an experience they felt in meditation. You might have had those experiences yourself or heard about them from others. Knowing them one fact becomes certain. While you may not be able to explain it, you feel connected to some events and people. You are drawn to certain ideas and beliefs and when you see or meet someone you experience an inner elation that you cannot easily shake off.

Discern the silence hidden in the noise of life. You can awaken to the silence right now. All that you have to do is to sit quietly and discern the silence hidden behind all the noise that reaches your ears. We generally do not notice this silence. But to the discerning person this silence can be an ocean of peace. He can swim in that ocean and feel relaxed and energized whenever he wants. We are immersed in this oceans and hence, this silence of the universe never deserts us.

Liberation in a general sense means liberation from whatever that holds you back or keeps in check. There are many types of liberation. We speak here only two types of liberation, spiritual liberation and mental liberation. Mental liberation means freedom from the conditioning to which we are subject. It is liberation from the learning, beliefs, values, opinions, prejudices, judgments, worldviews, attitudes, standards, which we harbor in our minds because of our interaction with the external world.

The Rudra of the Rigveda is a militant god of storms and lightening and a "provider of medicines". Though he did not enjoy the same status as Indra, Rudra definitely enjoyed his own importance in the Vedic pantheon because of his tempestuous nature, his association with storms and storm gods called Maruts and his ability to bring medicines to the people to prolong their lives. This is a musical invocation to them. In ideal situations, you should not take any criticism personally. At the best, a criticism is a message or a feedback about yourself or your actions. It is like a raw data coming from one of the instruments in the  machinery of your life giving you vital information about some aspect of your life, actions or personality. Instead of accepting it as a piece of data, if you personalize it, you will lose objectivity and fail to make use of it effectively as an opportunity to improve yourself. We can use criticism to improve ourselves or depress ourselves. We have a choice here. We can perceive in it an opportunity for self-growth or a threat to lapse into self-pity and persecution complex. The best to deal with it is to accept it as a possible feedback and act upon it rationally and analytically. For that you have to recognize that your happiness comes not from the approval you gain from others but from being yourself and knowing yourself.

There are three selves in you and you are probably aware of them. First, there is the physical self consisting of your body and brain, or what you may call the physical mind. Next, there is the mental self, consisting of your mind, thoughts, perceptions, feelings, memory and subconscious. Then you have the observing self, different from both, which you may discern at times in your meditation. The best way to enter this state is by focusing your mind upon your breathing and slowly becoming mindful of what is happening in you and around you. Another approach is to practice the "Not This, Not This" method (neti neti) mentioned in the Upanishads and remind yourself that you are not your mind and body. If you persist in your practice, gradually the idea will take root in you and you will become detached, composed and collected in your daily life, relationships, thinking and actions. You will bridge the gap between the observer and the observed, and grasp the essence of things that is not perceptible to the ordinary senses.

Hinduism is not an easy religion to practice. Centuries of oppression corrupted the Hindu mind with conflicting values. Hindus ought to be aware of the implications of disobeying the moral codes and the virtues of good human conduct. They ought to be aware of the consequences of their own actions that lead to their downfall.

Upanishads are best understood when you have a good knowledge of Vedic ritual terminology and the Vedic imagery hidden in the verses. Your understanding improves greatly if you pay deep attention to the verses. The Upanishads are mostly fragments of knowledge gleaned from various sources overtime and compiled into their current format. Therefore you do not find much coherence or continuity of thought.

It is rather the whole mind and body awareness pervading the mind, the ego, the intelligence, the senses, the organs of action, the nervous system, and various types of breathes. Citta is a kind of energy field, made up of the three gunas, namely, sattva, rajas and tamas...

I think for our personal growth and development, we need to adapt a multipronged approach to learning. We need to use various perspectives or approaches to cultivate an all-round knowledge and stretch our minds in every possible direction to assimilate whatever knowledge we can gather in the course of our lives. We need to focus on at least five areas, which I would call the five Darshanas of modern life.

Life is a combination of these three processes: random events, mechanical processes and intelligent actions. Probably the random events are also mechanical processes; but at this stage we do not have the knowledge to know as such. We have to understand how these three processes govern our lives and how we may use intelligence to interfere with random and mechanical events. Intelligent actions are responsible for our karma.

Saivism is a major sect of Hinduism. In fact, like Vaishnavism, it is a religion in itself. Until medieval times, it was also the most popular sect of Hinduism, with widest following. The Sect regards Lord Siva as the Brahman Himself and all other divinities as aspects of Him. The origins of this sect are probably rooted in the prehistoric fertility traditions of ancient India who worshipped Father God and Mother Goddess...

Each and everyone of us has an opportunity to practice yoga and enter into deeper states to see for ourselves what is hidden in each of us, where there is anything beyond this flux which we call as our consciousness or awareness. Mere intellectual knowledge does not help us to remain awake in deep sleep. But through yoga, we can learn to be observant and mindful when the mind and body are asleep. Only then we can realize the truth and ascertain whether the Buddha was right or the seers of the Upanishads. When you reach that state, you will realize that the notion of self created by your mind is not your real Self but a superficial individuality sustained by desires and attachmetns. There is a far deeper identity or individuality that is not of this world and not created by thoughts or desires. That is the real Self. Hence the saying, when the world is asleep, the seer is awake and when the world is awake, the seer is asleep.
